Andra Patterson started painting on ceramic surfaces, exploring ways to layer color and generate subtle changes in texture. She migrated to painting on paper, canvas, and board, which allowed her to increase the complexity of her images, broaden her color palette, and add the element of collage. Her layered, abstract paintings with strong brushwork have a rich palette, and reflect a sense of movement. They are painted in acrylics with mixed media and collage elements.

Patterson received a Master of Arts and a Master of Education before turning full-time to art and earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. She has taught in art schools in the Washington area and is devoted now to full-time work in her studio.

An image of Patterson’s piece, Legato I, was selected to become part of a desk calendar titled: “Homage to American Women Artists” with an edition of 30,000. It was to be given as an official gift to “members of the international diplomatic community and host country nationals.” Her work is collected both here and abroad.

In the last few years Andra has started painting in wax, both encaustic and cold wax.
